 Safety First

 Visual Inspection

Begin with a general visual inspection of the entire structure. Look for obvious signs of wear and tear, such as:

• Wood Damage: Cracks, splinters, or rot in wooden beams.
• Metal Damage: Rust, corrosion, or bending in metal components.
• Paint or Stain: Peeling or flaking paint/stain.

 Structural Integrity

Check the main components of your pergola:

• Posts and Beams: Ensure they are straight and firmly in place. Look for any warping or bowing.
• Joists and Rafters: These should be secure and free from excessive movement. Check for any signs of sagging.

 Fasteners and Connections

Examine all bolts, screws, nails, and other fasteners:

• Tightness: Make sure all fasteners are tight

Preparation

Before you start staining and sealing your pergola, you need to prepare the wood surface properly.

Materials Needed

• Wood cleaner or mild detergent
• Water hose or pressure washer

• Drop cloths or plastic sheeting
• Painter’s tape

1. Clean the Pergola:

• Remove any dirt, dust, mildew, or old paint using a wood cleaner or a mixture of mild detergent and water.
• Use a brush to scrub the surface, or a pressure washer for a more thorough cleaning. Ensure the pressure is not too high to avoid damaging the wood.
• Rinse the pergola thoroughly with water and let it dry completely.

• Once the pergola is dry, sand the wood to remove any rough spots, splinters, or remaining old finish. Use medium-grit sandpaper (80-120 grit).
• For large areas, a power sander can make the job quicker.
• After sanding, brush off or vacuum the wood dust.
